Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Stretching (P.N.F.)

P.N.F. is an extremely effective stretching technique targeting any tight muscle in the body. The technique combines passive stretching and isometrics contractions. P.N.F. encourages flexibility and coordination throughout the muscle’s entire range of motion. P.N.F is used to supplement daily stretching and is employed to make quick gains in range of motion to improve performance. P.N.F. stretching is best utilized to increase flexibility, range of motion and strength.

During the technique the patient will contract the muscle being treated against slight resistance and immediately after that contraction the muscle will be passively stretched. The neuro-muscular apparatus becomes briefly refractory after a contraction, and that is what allows for success in incrementally restoring range of motion. What that means is that immediately following a muscle contraction, the muscle is able to rest a longer length, yielding a better, longer stretch in a shorter time.
